h5p Editor Updates

The h5p editor now offers expanded formatting options, giving content creators more flexibility in designing content. These updates include the ability for content creator to:

• Underline text within h5p column content, ensuring important information can be highlighted for learners.
• Add hyperlinks to images, making visual content more interactive and resource-rich. Learners can click these links to access additional materials.
• Embed images and YouTube videos within tables, allowing for more structured and visually appealing content.
• Define responsive image and video dimensions to improve the display across different devices.

Chemistry Equations in h5p Content

Content creators can now add and display chemistry equations within h5p content, improving the platform’s support for STEM-based courses.

Branch Trigger

The new Branch Trigger block introduces the ability to open supplemental paths in learning maps based on a learner’s response to a question.

Content creators can configure logic to guide learners to additional content based on their response to the question ‘Unlock additional learning?’ Previously the logic to open the supplemental path was based on the learner’s performance on an h5p quiz.

When the component is added in a map, learners will see the question appear at the bottom of the screen.

⬆️Improvements 

Scrollbar: A scrollbar has been added to the viewing frame to help learners navigate to content that may appear offscreen.

Learning map icon colors: Previously, some content used in learning maps displayed a black check mark upon completion, while others showed a green checkmark. For consistency, all completed content now displays a green checkmark, except for failed quizzes, which retain the black checkmark as a visual indicator that the learner may need additional help on that item.

🐞Bug Fixes

• User Group Visibility: Some users were unable to see all groups on the ‘All Groups’ page. This issue has been fixed.
• Attachments on Assets: Previously, when assets were viewed directly on Orchard, attached files would download instead of opening in a new tab. Attachments will now open in a new tab as expected.

✨New Features

Access Documents Attached to Content

Visible to Learners:

Learners can now view and download supporting documents directly from any content type (e.g., videos and h5p content). This ensures they have the materials needed to engage with the content fully. Previously, resources like these were stored separately, requiring learners to navigate away from the content to access them. By integrating these directly into the content, the platform enhances accessibility, streamlines the learner experience, and supports diverse learning needs.

Content Creators:

In order to provide the attached content to learners, the content creator interface was also updated so that content creators can attach transcripts and other supporting documents to all types of content. These attachments are then displayed with the content, providing learners with immediate access to valuable supplemental materials. If nothing is attached, learners will not see the corresponding tabs.

Expanded Orchard Admin Functions

Orchard admins now have enhanced control and flexibility across the platform. Admins can create content anywhere within Orchard, view and edit permissions for all content, and access full revision histories to track changes over time. Additionally, admins can view and manage all groups.

Learner Progress Reset When Moved to a New Canvas Section

Digit previously implemented an automatic reset of learner progress when a student is moved from one section to another in a Canvas course. In order to align with that functionality, for courses that use Orchard via Digit, if a student is moved from one section to another, their learning map progress will be reset. 

Release Notes Notifications

Orchard admins now have a way to edit and publish release notes directly on Orchard. When Orchard content creators log in the first time after new release notes have been added, a notification will display in the main menu from which they can then access the notes.

⬆️Improvements 

H5p completion

Completion requirements for h5p content have been updated for any h5p types that do not have specific completion requirements. If the h5p doesn’t have specific requirements, it will be marked complete in the learning map as soon as it is viewed. 

Directive Text Blocks

Two additional directive text block use cases were added for use in a learning map. Now directive text blocks can be used within a supplemental path at the beginning or end, as well as in an if block without content attached to it.

Support for Subscript and Superscript in h5p content

Superscript and subscript text can now be added in questions across H5P content types. Content creators can add these using the toolbar in the H5P content editor. 

Instructor Toggle Added to one final page in Orchard 

A toggle to allow instructors to view all supplemental paths in a learning maps was previously implemented but one final view was outstanding on the map edit page in Orchard. The toggle has now been added to this page as well. 

UX and Design Enhancements

Visible to Learners:

• Minimize play button on videos in learning maps: Feedback was received that when viewing a video in a learning map, if the video was paused, the large play button obscured too much of the screen. Now when the video is paused and the user hovers over it, the play button remains visible for only 3 seconds. 

  

• Loading Animation Updated in Learning Map: The loading animation displayed during activity transitions has been updated. Previously, the animation appeared under the title of the previous activity, making it appear like the previous activity was loading instead of the next one. Now, the title of the upcoming activity is displayed while loading.

  

• Improved spacing in the learning map task list: For items with long titles or text in a learning map, more spacing was added between the tasks The field is also longer to accommodate the longer titles and avoid using ellipses when possible

• Enhanced Display for H5P Quizzes in Learning Maps: The display of H5P quizzes within learning maps has been improved by increasing the iframe size and optimizing the screen space usage to minimize white space.

• The 'empty' state design on the learning map edit page was updated.

• Unsaved Changes popup wording updated: The popup always displays, even if there were no changes made, so the wording was updated to match that. Previous: ‘This page contains unsaved changes…’ New: ‘The page may contain unsaved changes...’ 
• Updated Video Upload Limit Messaging: The video upload limit is correctly stated as 200 MB, not 5 GB, and this has been updated across the platform.
• Improved Duplicate URL Warning for Remote Videos: When a duplicate URL for a video is added, the design of the warning message is updated for better visibility and clarity.

Security and Infrastructure Enhancements

• Infrastructure Security Updates: Implemented autoscaling and other backend optimizations to enhance platform resilience and ensure secure handling of increased workloads.
• General Vulnerability Review Fixes: Addressed findings from a comprehensive vulnerability scan, resolving underlying technical concerns to align the platform with best practices for security and reliability.

🐞Bug Fixes

Learning Maps

• Group designation when copy: A bug that caused copied learning maps to be incorrectly saved as individual content, even when a group was designated during the copying process, has been resolved. Now, when a group is selected, the copied learning map is properly saved to that group.
• Admin unable to edit copied learning map: Orchard admins were getting a 403 error when attempting to edit a copied learning map. This has been addressed.
• The Instructor Notified block was not displayed when used on the primary path. This has been addressed and the block can now be used both on supplemental and primary paths.
• Completion icons were not displayed and events not captured when an LTI session was active. This was only happening on the learning map edit page, when the user was also logged in through canvas.
• In progress icon persists when a quiz is completed after having navigated away: A bug has been resolved where the 'in progress' icon for a quiz would persist even after the quiz was fully completed. This only occurred if a learner partially submitted quiz responses, navigated away, and then returned and fully completed the quiz. Now, the icon correctly updates to a checkmark upon quiz completion.
• Unlock next asset in path when image or document with required block is viewed: When a learner views an image or document in a learning map with a required block, the next asset in the path now unlocks immediately. Previously, the next asset remained locked until the learner navigated away, causing learners to get stuck.
• Fix for Supplemental Paths Toggle: After completing a learning map, clicking the "Show All Learning Activities" toggle now displays all supplemental paths immediately. Previously, users had to perform an extra step by clicking the toggle and then selecting an additional item in the map for the supplemental paths to appear.

Content

Fixed Issues:

• Resolved a 403 error that occurred when attempting to save text in an H5P column.
• Eliminated white space appearing above some H5Ps in columns.
• Fixed an issue where the H5P iframe embedder cut off the bottom of interactive content.
• Corrected a problem preventing VTT files from uploading to H5P interactive videos.
• Addressed an issue where PPT files failed to open in Firefox browsers when added as transcripts for videos.
• Fixed inconsistent display of video information on the learner agency slide. Some views displayed and others didn't. It is now consistent in the different views.
• Resolved an error page that appeared after creating a new media item.

Groups

Fixed Issues:

• Fixed an issue where an unexpected error appeared when an Orchard admin attempted to add a new group.
• Resolved a 403 error that occurred when a group member tried to access a group asset they should have permission to view.
• Addressed a 403 error on the revisions tab for group assets. This update also resolved a discrepancy where the published status did not match across different pages for the same asset.

Other Errors and Unexpected Behavior

Fixed Issues:

• Improved performance on the Orchard content browse page, which previously experienced timeout errors due to long loading times.
• Resolved unexpected errors occurring in several admin reports on the staging environment.
• Fixed a visual issue where the screen would shake when accessing the "Help" tab to view user guides, specifically the "What is a learning map" section. This issue occurred on HP EliteBook devices with 15.6-inch screens at 90% zoom in Chrome.
